Bicentennial Celebration Activities in the Works

E-mail Print PDF

Several individuals have been steadily working to make the celebration of Huron’s Bicentennial Year interesting and fun for all residents.
Be sure to read all about the ARTirondack Chair Project in this issue.  Don’t miss the Preview Party on June 11 at Firelands Col.

Beard Contest
It’s not too late to begin growing a beard for the Beard Contest.  Details were listed in the Huron Hometown News, but in a nutshell, the Worst Beard, the Best Goatee, Best Handlebar, Best Full-grown, best impersonator of Ruggles or Wright are included in the judging classifications.  Beard Permits and Shaving Permits are for sale at the Huron Chamber of Commerce Office.  Judging is August 9, so be there or be square (with your permit, of course).  Prizes will be awarded.
Bicentennial Float
The Bicentennial Float is taking shape, and we have to applaud Huron resident, Dick Durkin, who has almost single-handedly built this float. He has one helper, but could use several more.  Some monetary donations would be welcomed, too.  Call Sheila at the Huron Chamber of Commerce, if you would like to help in some way – 419-433-5700.  The float will be featured in the Riverfest Parade.
By the way –the Bicentennial Committee is encouraging all Huron City and Township neighborhoods to be represented in that parade.  How about it?  The Huron Lions Club always sponsors and organizes the parade, so they are the people to talk to if you have a group that would like to participate in the parade.
Photo Contest
The Bicentennial Photo Contest starts NOW!  Pick up your entry application at the Huron Chamber of Commerce between June1 and July 1.  Only 72 entries will be accepted. A foam board backing to be attached to the entry photo will be supplied to you in exchange for your completed application and entry fee of $5.
Odd Ball Olympics
The Bicentennial Committee is organizing a series of zany competitions pitting teams from each section of town and township against all comers.  On Sunday, August 16, the contests will be held at the Huron High School Memorial Stadium and the surrounding areas. The town and township will be divided by neighborhoods into eight equally matched areas with teams competing from each of the eight areas. Each team captain will be responsible for recruiting players.  The captain and players will meet to name their team, organize by filling every spot in every competition, and search out, if possible, cheerleaders representing their section. More information will be in next week’s paper.
There are many more activities in the works for all residents, including a one-day Scavenger Hunt.   The committee has been working hard to make this a great celebration, and they hope that at least one of the activities will appeal to every resident.
