Gardening with Mary : Time for a Road Trip!

E-mail Print PDF

By Mary Strayer, Master Gardener

Recently, I discovered a road trip that would be fun for everyone who loves gardening.  Drive to the Louisville KY area, to Yew Dell Gardens.

The gardens are a delight and well kept.  The gardens came about when Theodore Klein lived on the property, and developed it for more than 60 years.  Up until his death, at 93, Mr. Klein was taking care of the gardens and the greenhouse by himself.  After his death,   the community decided to take on the project, and it is now run by volunteer gardeners.
Yew Dell Gardens now is a botanical garden dedicated to garden education, and they specialize in research into new plants for this region.  The gardens hold a tremendous collection of plants which have been bred and selected for this area.
This is a garden for people who love to see plants, all different kinds of plants growing wonderfully together.  I saw the largest roses and peonies I have seen in my life there, and the garden was also filled with sculptures and various artwork donated to the gardens.  If you are looking for the unusual, Yew Dell Gardens is the place to go.
There are rock gardens, formal gardens, alpine gardens, and even an English-Style walled garden with a coy pond of course.   The gardens offer workshops for nearby residents to attend, and there is always a plant sale going on.
Mr. Klein built a limestone castle to mimic the castles in Europe.  Towers and wrought iron scones transform the visitors back to another era.  Stroll the paths, and contemplate the wondrous beauty, and this marvelous treasure.
The trip takes 6 hours to get to the gardens, so you can make it in a day.  Information on this garden can be found on the Internet by typing in Yew Dell Gardens.  The cost to tour the garden is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors.  Yew Dell Gardens is a trip well worth considering.
