Firelands to Host Pediatric Therapy Educational Series
Attention parents, grandparents and teachers of preschool-aged children: Firelands Regional Medical Center will be hosting the Pediatric Program Picky Eater vs. Problem Feeders on Tuesday, Oct. 12.


The program will be presented by Erika Kemp, MS, OTR/L, occupational therapist, and Katie Nelson, MS, CCC-SLP, speech therapist at Firelands. A typical 2- or 3-yearold is often labeled as a picky eater.  How do you know if your child is just a picky eater or if they are becoming a problem feeder?  The program will outline current evidence on children’s eating habits and introduce a therapeutic approach to help handle some of these difficulties in the home.
The program will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Resource Room at South Campus, 1912 Hayes Ave., Sandusky.
The final topic in the Pediatric Therapy Educational Series is Eating and Nutrition in Autism on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

Firelands to Offer HeartSaver First Aid
Firelands will be sponsoring a HeartSaver First Aid and CPR/AED Course on Wednesday, Oct. 13 from 8 a.m. to noon. This course will be held at South Campus in the Education Room, located on the first floor at 1912 Hayes Ave., Sandusky.  This course is ideal for anyone who needs to know the basics of first aid and be certified to perform CPR and AED. The course also addresses health and safety issues and blood-borne disease protection. 
The class fee is $75 per person, which includes a “take home” book.  The Foundation for Firelands provides funding to make this program possible. For more information or to register, call 419-557-6740.

Free Breast Cancer Forum Held
Firelands Regional Medical Center will be hosting a free Breast Cancer Forum on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. at Firelands’ Main Campus, 1111 Hayes Ave., Sandusky. 
The evening will include a panel of physicians who will discuss breast health, breast cancer, and the importance of breast cancer screenings. Discussions will include:
-    “Importance of Performing a Breast Self-exam and How to do it the Proper Way,” presented by Jennifer M. Schneidler, MD, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Firelands Physician Group;
-    “What’s New in Breast Imaging,” presented by Karen S. Sheehan, MD, Radiology/Imaging, Firelands;
-    “Stereotactic Breast Nodule Biopsy,” presented by Fredric H. Itzkowitz, DO, General Surgery, North Coast Surgical Associates, Inc.;
-    “Medical Oncology Treatment Options for Breast Cancer,” presented by Amy M. Reese, MD, FACP and Vinay K. Gudena, MD, MPG medical oncologists with University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center at Firelands.
-    “Radiation Treatment Options for Breast Cancer,” presented by Grae L. Schuster, MD, radiation oncologist with University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center at Firelands.
-    “Breast Reconstruction after Surgery,” presented by Kim Ott, BSN, RN, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Firelands Physician Group.

Happiest Baby on the Block at Erie County Health Department
Firelands Regional Medical Center, in coordination with the Erie County Health Department WIC office, will be offering the Happiest Baby on the Block parenting class on Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m at the Erie County Health Department, 420 Superior St., Sandusky.  This course is free of charge and is made possible through grant funding.
The Happiest Baby on the Block is based on the techniques of world-renowned pediatrician, Dr. Harvey Karp.  Dr. Karp has been featured on Good Morning America, The Dr. Phil Show, ABC World News Tonight, CNN, and numerous national radio programs.
The Happiest Baby program is a national curriculum and is taught by a certified instructor.  Among the essential information offered to participants, parents will be taught a step-by-step approach to quickly soothe the fussiest baby.  The methods are designed to increase sleep, parental confidence, and family harmony while decreasing stress, frustration, and exhaustion that many times are present when parents are adjusting to the changes a new baby brings.

Firelands Hosts Pediatric Clinics
Firelands will be hosting a Pediatric Cardiology Clinic on Wednesday, Oct. 13, and a Pediatric Neurology Clinic on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Staffed by board certified physicians, the pediatric cardiology clinic will be held at the Firelands Main Campus, 1111 Hayes Ave., Sandusky; and the neurology clinic at Firelands South Campus Outpatient Specialty Clinic, 1912 Hayes Ave.

Monthly Luncheon Club to be Held
Firelands’ Luncheon Club will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the Sandusky Yacht Club, 529 E. Water St., Sandusky. 
Jennifer M. Schneider, MD, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Firelands Physician Group, will present ‘Leaky Pipes? Tips & Tricks for Dealing with Incontinence.”
Enjoy the yacht club’s delicious Wednesday buffet lunch, which includes the following for $10 per person (includes tax/tip; cash or check only): deluxe salad bar, soup station and rolls, cold cut sandwich bar, hot entrees with at least two meats, vegetables, pasta or fish, assorted desserts, hot tea, iced tea and coffee.
The buffet lunch is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will be followed by the presentation at 12:30 p.m.  The Luncheon Club program is open to the public and is presented by knowledgeable healthcare providers.
