Self-Defense Class Offered at Firelands
Firelands Regional Medical Center will be offering a Self-Defense Class on Monday, Jan. 10 and continuing on Tuesday, Jan. 11. Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Community Resource Room at Firelands South Campus, 1912 Hayes Ave., Sandusky.
Under the guidance of Sandusky Police Officers, this interactive course is designed to help participants identify dangerous situations and to form a plan of escape through preventative action.
Participants are encouraged to wear soft-soled shoes and comfortable clothing to practice techniques and strategies of self-defense. Students under age 18 are required to have parental permission to participate.
Stork Express Offered at Firelands
Firelands Regional Medical Center will be hosting sessions of Stork Express on the following days during the month of January:
• Saturday, Jan. 8 from 9 to 11 a.m.;
• Saturday, Jan. 22 from 9 to 11 a.m.
All sessions will be held at Firelands Main Campus, 1111 Hayes Ave.
Stork Express is a free program designed to give pregnant women the opportunity to start on paperwork that is required during their hospital stay. During the program, each participant will review and sign the necessary paperwork, watch the required safety video and take a tour of the OB Department.
Stork Express helps to cut down on the amount of paperwork during admission, allowing the focus to be on the birthing process. It also provides mom-to-be and her spouse/support person the opportunity to meet a nurse from the OB Department and ask any question that may be lingering as their exciting day approaches. Any mom-to-be that is at least 34 weeks into her pregnancy is welcome to attend. A spouse/support person is also welcome and is encouraged to participate.

Free Screenings at Morning Coffee
Join Firelands 55+ Club from 8 to 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 5 for Morning Coffee. It will be held at Firelands’ South Campus, Community Resource Room. The following screenings will be available:
• Free Blood Pressure Screening;
• Free Blood Sugar Screening;
• Cholesterol Screening for $6;
• Total Lipid Profile for $16 (12-hour fast).

Firelands Offering Childbirth Class
Firelands will offer a four-week Childbirth Preparation class on the following dates: Wednesday, Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Childbirth Preparation classes are held at Firelands’ South Campus, 1912 Hayes Ave.
Participants will learn breathing patterns and relaxation exercises to be used during labor and delivery. Induction of labor, medication and anesthesia options, Caesarian birth and recovery will also be discussed.
Childbirth classes are taught by experienced obstetrical nurses from Firelands with a clinical background focused on contemporary childbirth methods. It is recommended that this course be taken during the last trimester of pregnancy and that expectant mothers select a class that ends at least three weeks before their due date
The cost for the class is $35 per couple. No one will be refused this course due to inability to pay. The Foundation for Firelands provides funding to make this program possible. To register, call 419-557-7840.
Healthcare Provider CPR Courses Offered at Firelands
Firelands will offer the Healthcare Provider CPR Certification Course during the following dates in January:
• Tuesday, Jan. 4 from 8 a.m. to noon;
• Thursday, Jan. 27 from 8 a.m. to noon.
All classes will be held at Firelands South Campus, 1912 Hayes Ave. This Healthcare Provider Course is for medical professionals and students beginning course work in healthcare professions only. The class fee is $40 per person.
Those attending will learn adult, child, and infant CPR in cases where there are either one or two rescuers and Obstructed Airway Management for adults, children, and infants. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training is also included.
